Take a magical journey across Fife using augmented reality and follow the footsteps of past Kings and Queens.
Fife tourism board came to us wanting a unique and engaging tourist attraction that would encourage families to visit the many historical sites and facilities around Fife. They wanted to create an offering that was exciting, educational and that appealed to the digital generation. Alongside the AR entertainment experts over at AliveLab Ltd, we created a county wide experience that takes users on a journey through time and helps them learn about the history of Fife through fun games and puzzles, all presented by our magical AR storyteller, Jess the Jester.
How Does it Work?
The experience uses a free app which can be downloaded from the Apple and Google Play stores. Users can download the app prior to their visit or at any of the chosen site locations of Ravenscraig Castle, Lochore, Aberdour, Falkland Estate and Palace, Markinch, Dunfermline Abbey and Burntisland.
At all of these locations there are magic poster boards which, when scanned with the app, bring our magical Jester to life in augmented reality. Jess tells the users about the history of the location they are at and sets them an interactive task such as loading and firing a cannon, building a castle, becoming an archer, playing tennis with Mary Queen of Scots and more. Once completed, users earn a gold medal and a stamp to add to their map.
The app also integrates a database of local attractions around the user’s current location (e.g shops, hotels, restaurants) to encourage visitors to really make the most of their time at these remarkable locations and to give them a chance to rest their legs!
Promotional Activities
To help promote the campaign we created two pieces of promotional material. The first being a pair of stickers which when scanned with the app brought the Jester to life as a demo that users could control and take photos of. The second was a Facebook campaign that launched a Jess the Jester selfie filter (it got a good laugh here in the studio!) that encouraged users to download the app and share their images online.
Outcome
The campaign has been very well received and the feedback has been great. Parents and children alike have enjoyed the exciting activities and learning more about the history of Fife. The app has also gone on to win the 2019 Innovation Award at the UK Family Attraction Expo. Future locations are now being planned to expand the app even further.
